FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is INCOSE?
INCOSE is an international organization formed to develop, nurture, and enhance the interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. INCOSE Chapters exist in all continents, with the New England chapter being one of the first chapters to incorporate. INCOSE works with industry and academia to further research and improve communications between practitioners of systems engineering.

What is Systems Engineering?
Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem:

 - Operations
 - Performance
 - Test
 - Manufacturing
 - Cost & Schedule
 - Training & Support
 - Disposal

Systems Engineering integrates all the disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. Systems Engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs.
If you work or think in systems concepts, you can benefit from the application of systems engineering processes. Systems engineering or engineering of systems is increasingly important to developing competitive products in today's markets. A systems engineering is often the "glue" between marketing, engineering and manufacturing. The systems engineering approach can improve the effectiveness of all disciplines.

What isn't System Engineering?
Many technicians and implementation specialists are often carry the title of "System Engineer". These important roles are not to be confused with Systems Engineering, which is primarily involved in project management, product and requirement definition and planning.

What are the benefits of joining INCOSE?
Networking, education and personal growth. Meeting fellow systems engineers, learning at all levels - from primer to a peer reviewed academic journal, and the satisfaction of learning new ways to achieve your work goals.

How much does it cost to join INCOSE?
General Membership is $105 a membership year. Joining mid-year is subject to pro-rated fees. Student memberships are just $10 per year. To qualify as a student member, the course load must be at least 3/4 of full time.

How do members get together?
The chapter hosts members meetings on a monthly basis. In addition, the chapter sponsers tutorials and other activites on an ongoing basis. The chapter has a mailing list which may be used for internal member communications.

Where are the meetings held?
The meetings are held at venues provided by sponsors and at various locations related to the organization. We typically try to hold the meetings in the suburban Boston area to accomodate members coming in from all across New England.

Is INCOSE open to anyone?
Anyone may join INCOSE. As Systems Engineering is practiced by many but is only starting to be formally taught in academia (mostly as a graduate degree), most of the members do not have formal education in the field.

Can INCOSE help me find a job?
The global INCOSE organization maintains a mailing list for job openings posting by employers. Any INCOSE member may join this mailing list. In addition, the networking and contacts gained at chapter meetings can prove to be invaluable!

How can I help?
We are always seeking volunteers to help in the on-going operations of the chapter. We currently have several open positions, and will also consider sponsoring any Systems Engineering related activity that is of interest to the chapter members.
